El Paso's First Divisional Pickleball Tournament
The newest event in the Sun Bowl Association's portfolio will be a pickleball tournament, offering age and skill-level based competition. Men's, women's, and mixed doubles will be held with cash prizes for the open division. The event will also offer El Paso's first hybrid division, pairing standing players with wheelchair participants. The tournament is scheduled for March 22 - 23 at Eastwood High School, where the tennis courts will be converted to pickleball. This will be El Paso's first large-scale tournament, and is expected to draw players from around the region! Registration is expected to open the first week in February at pickleballtournaments.com . A huge shout out to the Pickleball El Paso Association Board members who spent six months working with the Sun Bowl Association setting the foundation for this first time event: Ben Avalos, Kelly Groves, Patty Morrow, Dina Chen and devoted member Terry Avalos.
Veterans Is Opening!
Pickleball community, your patience is being rewarded: After 1 1/2 years of renovations, Veterans Rec Center is ready to reopen! The Grand Opening ceremony will be Monday, January 27, at 4PM, but we will have access to play in the gym starting at 3PM. Located at 5301 Salem, near Sun Valley and Rushing, Veterans will be offering pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00AM - 2:00PM.
Nolan Richardson (near Hondo Pass) will shift to an MWF schedule of 10AM - 2PM. Northeasters! You now have pickleball five days a week - congratulations! This should help accommodate the consistent crowds at Nolan.
To all of the clinic attendees who joined Pickleball El Paso Association - Welcome!
Our VP Ben Avalos will be offering a new Skills and Drills monthly session at Veterans on the third Friday of every month, from 9:00 - 11:30. This clinic will require registration by texting "Pickleball skills and drills (your name and which month)" to 915-873-7817. Sessions are limited to 18 players. All levels welcome, no charge.

Ben will continue to hold Beginner Clinics on the first Friday of each month at Nolan, from 10AM - 12:30. Nolan Richardson Rec Center is located in northeast El Paso, near Hondo Pass.
San Juan Rec Center to Add Fridays in February
This gym is centrally located near Paisano, in the Bassett area. Starting February 1, Friday hours will be 12PM to 4PM.
